Virtual Sensory Room: Visual

Managing Visual Overstimulation

  • If you are in a room where you are able to change the lighting, dim the lights or turn them off completely and use a lamp or softer light.
  • Wearing sunglasses can help combat bright lights, both outside and inside.
  • After doing visually demanding tasks (like looking at a screen or reading), take a vision break. This could mean looking at a spot on the wall for 20-30 seconds or even just closing your eyes for a moment.
  • If you are able to, reduce visual clutter in the room.
  • Use the blue light filter on your device. Software like f.lux can help reduce eye strain and keep you on a good sleep schedule with its time-based filtering.
