University Libraries Policy: Responsible Use of Licensed Online Resources

Responsible Use of Licensed Online Resources

Shenandoah University Libraries provides authorized users (currently enrolled students, current faculty and staff, and other authorized users) access to purchased and licensed online resources for noncommercial, educational, scholarly, and research purposes. Copyright laws and individual license agreements between Shenandoah University Libraries and the providers and publishers govern online resource access, use, and reproduction. Individual users must comply with the terms and conditions of each resource. Prohibited use or actions generally include:

  • Sharing passwords or authorization codes with others or allowing anyone other than an authorized user to use the licensed materials.
  • Systematic or substantial downloading or printing of articles, books, or other information, including the use of robots, spiders, or intelligent agents to access, search, and/or systematically download content.
  • Abridging, modifying, translating, or creating any derivative work of the licensed materials without the licensor's permission, including results of the use of artificial intelligence tools.
  • Using licensed materials for commercial purposes.
  • Redistributing or posting copyrighted material on publicly accessible websites or the open web.

These policies are in conformance with SU IT policies for responsible IT use and other campus policies governing the use of computing networks. Violations of this policy may result in referral for investigation and discipline. Questions about licensed library resources may be directed to Jackie DeLong (jdelong@su.edu), Resources Librarian.
