Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided exclusively for current SU students, faculty and staff. Books, scores and copies of journal articles needed for research may be borrowed or copied from other libraries in Virginia or elsewhere in the United States. This service is available for items not owned by the University Libraries, or items that are missing or damaged.
Required textbooks may not be requested through Interlibrary Loan. Students should contact the university bookstore for information on purchasing or renting textbooks that are required for current courses.
Faculty members may request the purchase of materials to be used for classes by submitting the form on the Requesting Materials for the Collections page.
Some SU students who receive their instruction off-campus (distance education) may request the document delivery of books and journal articles. For more information, see the Materials by Mail page or contact Access Services Coordinator Bridget Reddy.
The library will not process any ILL requests if the patron has overdue ILL items or charges. Loans not picked up within 30 days will be returned to the lending library.
The library subsidizes part or all of the cost of interlibrary loans for students. Faculty members are responsible for any costs incurred by their requests. In addition to borrowing fees, there may be copyright royalty fees for certain copies. We request that faculty supply a budget code if they wish to charge ILL fees to a departmental account.
Community users, including members of the Friends of the Library, are referred to the Handley Regional Library for interlibrary loan service. We are unable to provide interlibrary loan service to community users.
Copyright law specifies that photocopies received through interlibrary loan are not to be used “for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” The library reserves the right to refuse an interlibrary loan copying request if, in its judgment, fulfillment would violate the copyright law.
