Workshop & Review Opportunities

Fall 2023 Workshop from JMU Libraries

This asynchronous online workshop will introduce you to open textbooks and allow you to explore existing open textbooks available for your courses. After you complete the workshop, you will be eligible to write a review of an open textbook and receive a $200 stipend funded by VIVA, Virginia’s Academic Library Consortium.

  • Please notify Aimee Gee that you intend to participate, and apply online by October 6, 2023.
  • You can complete this self-paced online workshop any time by October 15, 2023.
  • Textbook reviews will be due by November 26, 2023.

VIVA Open Grants

New Round of VIVA Open Adopt Grants 

A new round of VIVA Open Adopt Grants is now open. Informational webinars will be held on October 3October 18, and November 3 (registration required). Applications are due November 7, 2023. More information can be found on the VIVA website. Questions? Contact vivaopen@gmu.edu.

Note: These grants are distinct from the larger scale VIVA Open Course Grants to support team and departmental adoptions, as well as projects seeking to adapt or create new OER. The next round of these grants will open later in the fall.


VIVA Open Course Grants are awarded in four categories:

  • Content Creation Grants - for projects that adapt or create materials for credit-bearing courses at VIVA institutions
  • Open Pedagogy Grants - for instructors using OER in innovative ways and sharing the materials necessary for others to replicate their efforts
  • Open Ancillary Grants - for the creation of test banks, assignments, slides and/or lectures to extend the utility of existing OER textbooks
  • Large Scale Adoption Grants - for departments or programs moving a course or group of courses to no-cost materials
