About

Banned Books Week

An annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It highlights the value of free and open access to information.

What is a challenge?

An attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group. Challenges are more than a person expressing a point of view; they are efforts to remove access to material at a school or public library.

What is banning?

The removal of challenged materials.
