Student Employees Training Guide: Expectations

A guide to assist in the training of student employees

Expectations

Our student employees are a big part of the library team. Your responsibilities and tasks are vital to the daily operation of the library.

Dependability

  • Be on time and stay until your shift is over
    • Let me know ASAP if you are sick or an emergency has come up.
    • In all other cases, it is your responsibility to find coverage.
  • Absences should be kept to a minimum and absences without notification are unacceptable.
    • 3 unexcused absences are grounds for dismissal.
    • If your schedule isn’t working, let’s talk about it.
  • You must pick up at least 2 and no more than 5 shifts needing a substitute per semester.

  • You must work at least 5 hours during Finals Week. There will be a sign up sheet. We will sign up by seniority.

Customer Service

  • Make eye contact with anyone who comes in the door. You don’t have to say anything. Smiling would be nice.

Disciplinary Actions

  • The Work Study Supervisor will give verbal advice, correction, reprimand and warning to the student employee.  If required changes in a student’s behavior are not noticed, a verbal warning or reprimand will be given.  Grounds for immediate dismissal are:  insubordination, poor performance, unexcused or excessive absences, theft of Library or University property, willful destruction of Library or University property, committing illegal acts, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while at work and tampering with a signed time card or falsifying hours on a time card.

Commitment

  • Accept tasks willingly
  • No task will be absolutely terrible, but you may not love it.
  • Perform assigned tasks without prompting. Take Initiative.
  • No food or drinks at the Circulation desk. Water is allowed.

Patron Privacy

  • Keep patron information confidential. This includes:

    • Who has an item checked out

    • ID numbers in connection with a student's name

    • Phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses

Attire

  • There is no formal dress code, but dress like you are going to be seen in a professional setting. Please no PJs, profanity on T-shirts, etc.

Staying on Task

  • Limit conversations with friends
  • You may only work on homework if all of your tasks are completed and are done so carefully and thoroughly. This privilege will not be extended if library tasks are not done well. Library tasks and assisting students are priority while at work.
  • You may not be on social media, stream videos, or play games while working

Scheduling & Inclement Weather

  • You will be able to work 7-9 hours a week at the library.
    • I will more than likely only schedule 7 hours but you will have the opportunity to pick up extra hours as a substitute.
  • You enter your time online on Hornet Hub.
    • I will approve it weekly.
  • You are not required to work during breaks and holidays.  A separate schedule is arranged for exam week and you are expected to work during exam week.
  • I will let you know if the library is closed due to inclement weather. Just because classes are cancelled doesn’t mean we are closed.

Evaluations

  • Evaluations are at the end of the year. Evaluated on cooperation, attitude toward work, dependability and courtesy.
